SteppingStone

Project Overview

SteppingStone is a bespoke online discipleship and training platform designed to help a church of approximately 350 people grow in faith, develop their understanding of Christianity and become equipped for everyday life and service.

The church community includes people of different ages, backgrounds, levels of Christian experience and learning preferences. Some people engage most effectively with video teaching, others prefer listening to podcasts, while others benefit from reading, reflection and practical exercises.

The challenge was to provide a consistent, accessible and engaging learning experience that could accommodate these differences while guiding individuals through a structured journey of spiritual growth.

Procium designed SteppingStone as an integrated digital learning academy, combining structured learning pathways, multimedia teaching, personal reflection, practical resources and an AI-powered assistant.

The objective was to make discipleship more accessible, structured and personalised, while giving people the freedom to engage with teaching in the ways that suit them best.

01 — The Challenge

Equipping a diverse church community through a consistent and accessible approach to discipleship.

A church of approximately 350 people needed an effective way to provide ongoing discipleship, teaching and training across its congregation. The community represented a wide range of ages, backgrounds, spiritual experiences and preferences for learning.

Traditional teaching methods alone could not easily accommodate everyone's needs. Some members preferred watching teaching videos, others wanted to listen while travelling or working, and others preferred reading material at their own pace.

The church also needed to provide a clear progression through different subjects, helping people understand where to begin and what to explore next.

The principal challenges included:

  • Diverse learning preferences: People engaged with video, audio, reading and practical activities in different ways.

  • Different stages of spiritual growth: New Christians and experienced church members required different starting points and levels of teaching.

  • Lack of a single learning journey: Teaching needed to be organised into clear pathways rather than presented as disconnected resources.

  • Accessibility and flexibility: Members needed to engage with learning at times and locations convenient to them.

  • Encouraging personal reflection: Teaching needed to stimulate questions, application and personal growth rather than simply deliver information.

  • Finding relevant resources: People needed an easy way to discover teaching and materials addressing their particular questions.

  • Supporting ongoing engagement: The church wanted to encourage continuous learning beyond Sunday services and organised courses.

  • Providing a scalable learning environment: The platform needed to support the congregation without placing excessive administrative demands on church leaders.

The challenge was to create an intuitive online academy that could guide people through spiritual growth while respecting their individual learning preferences.

02 — Our Approach

Designing an engaging learning experience around structured paths, flexible media and intelligent support.

Rather than creating a conventional library of teaching videos, Procium approached SteppingStone as a complete learning environment.

The central concept was to organise discipleship into clearly defined Paths, with each Path consisting of a series of manageable Steps. Each Step would provide a complete learning experience, allowing people to explore a subject through different media and reflect on what they had learned.

Our approach centred on five principles.

Create structured learning pathways

Organise teaching into Paths representing areas of discipleship and Christian growth.

Each Path contains a sequence of Steps, giving participants a clear starting point and an intuitive progression through the material.

Provide multiple ways to learn

Each Step brings together complementary teaching resources:

  • A video presentation.
  • Questions and personal reflections stored within the platform.
  • A podcast for audio-based learning.
  • An e-learning book for those who prefer reading.

This allows people to engage with the same subject through the medium that best suits them.

Encourage reflection and application

Questions and reflections form part of the learning experience.

Rather than treating discipleship as passive consumption of content, the platform encourages people to consider how the teaching relates to their own lives.

Make the teaching searchable through AI

The learning content is incorporated into a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system.

This provides the knowledge base for the SteppingStone Assistant, an AI-powered guide that can answer questions using the church's teaching material and direct users towards relevant content.

Provide practical supporting resources

A dedicated Resource Lab brings together worksheets, additional materials and practical exercises.

This extends learning beyond the core teaching Steps and helps people apply what they have explored.

The guiding principle was to combine structured progression with freedom of choice, allowing people to follow a clear learning journey without restricting how they engage with the material.

03 — The Solution

A complete online discipleship academy combining structured learning, multimedia teaching and an AI-powered knowledge assistant.

Procium developed SteppingStone as a web-based learning portal designed to make discipleship accessible, engaging and easy to navigate.

Branded Learning Paths

The platform organises its training content into clearly identifiable Paths. Each Path has its own visual identity and contains a series of Steps that guide users through a particular area of learning.

The branded design makes the learning journey intuitive, helping participants understand where they are and what comes next.

Multimedia Learning Steps

Every Step brings together the resources needed to explore a subject in depth. Teaching videos provide the principal presentation, while podcasts and e-learning books offer alternative ways to engage with the same content.

This makes the learning experience more flexible for people with different preferences and circumstances.

Questions and Personal Reflections

Each Step includes questions and reflections held within the application's database. Participants can engage with the material thoughtfully, considering its meaning and practical application.

This adds an interactive dimension to the learning experience.

RAG-Powered SteppingStone Assistant

One of the platform's distinctive features is its integrated AI assistant. The teaching content is processed into a RAG knowledge base, enabling the assistant to retrieve relevant material when users ask questions.

Rather than relying solely on general AI knowledge, the assistant can use the teaching content provided by the church to support its responses. It can also direct users to relevant Paths, Steps and resources, helping them discover the material most useful to their questions.

Resource Lab

The Resource Lab provides a dedicated space for supporting materials, including worksheets, practical exercises and additional learning resources.

This allows the church to complement its teaching content with materials that encourage reflection, discussion and action.

Integrated Learning Portal

All these features are brought together in a consistent, branded web application.

Users can explore learning Paths, move through Steps, watch videos, listen to podcasts, read e-learning books, complete reflections, access the Resource Lab and ask questions of the SteppingStone Assistant.

The result is a joined-up learning environment that combines the structure of an online academy with the accessibility and flexibility of modern digital media.

04 — The Benefits

More accessible teaching. Clearer learning journeys. Greater opportunities for personal growth.

SteppingStone provides a foundation for supporting discipleship across a diverse church community.

Accessible Learning for Different Ages and Backgrounds

The platform accommodates different levels of experience and preferences for engaging with teaching. Members can choose the format that works best for them while following a consistent learning pathway.

Clear Progression Through Discipleship

Structured Paths and Steps provide an intuitive way to organise learning. Rather than searching through disconnected resources, participants can follow a clear sequence of subjects and activities.

Greater Flexibility

Video, podcast and e-learning formats allow people to engage with teaching at different times and in different settings. Learning is no longer limited to attending a particular meeting or course.

More Reflective Learning

Questions and reflections encourage users to engage actively with teaching and consider its relevance to their lives. This supports a learning experience focused on understanding and application.

AI-Assisted Discovery of Teaching

The SteppingStone Assistant helps users find relevant information within the church's own teaching resources. People can ask questions in natural language and receive guidance towards appropriate content.

Better Use of Existing Teaching Resources

Videos, podcasts, books and worksheets become part of one organised digital learning environment.

The RAG system also makes teaching material more discoverable, allowing existing content to support new questions and learning needs.

Reduced Dependence on Individual Teaching Sessions

A structured online academy allows members to revisit material and continue learning independently. This complements personal mentoring, small groups and church-based teaching rather than replacing them.

A Foundation for Future Growth

The Path and Step structure allows the church to expand its teaching catalogue over time. New subjects, resources and learning journeys can be introduced within the same consistent framework.

SteppingStone demonstrates how technology can help a church make its teaching more accessible, encourage ongoing discipleship and equip people to grow at their own pace.

05 — The Wider Lesson

AI-powered learning works best when it is grounded in trusted content and organised around a clear learning journey.

SteppingStone illustrates an important opportunity for churches, charities and other training organisations.

Many organisations already possess substantial knowledge in the form of videos, presentations, written resources, training materials and practical experience. However, that knowledge is often difficult to access, fragmented across different systems or available only during scheduled teaching sessions.

Simply placing content online does not necessarily create an effective learning experience. The greater opportunity is to organise that material into clear pathways, offer it through different media and make it discoverable through an AI assistant grounded in the organisation's own content.

SteppingStone combines these elements into a single learning environment. Structured Paths guide progression. Multimedia resources accommodate different preferences. Questions and reflections encourage application. The Resource Lab provides practical support. The RAG-powered assistant helps users explore the teaching and find relevant resources.

The project demonstrates how bespoke software can transform an organisation's existing knowledge into an accessible, interactive and continuously developing learning resource.

The greatest value of AI in learning is not replacing teachers. It is making their knowledge more accessible and helping people find the guidance they need, when they need it.
